The cleaning of the juicer can be a make or break factor. If this becomes a detested chore, your juicer will soon be banished to dust-gathering duty in the deepest cupboard in the kitchen, never to be used again!

The easiest way to ensure that you don’t get bogged down in cleaning misery, is to ask for a in-store demonstration. Go through the whole performance, from feeding the juicer to washing it. Your main consideration is ensuring a juicing process where every step is as simple, quick and painless as possible. The more components the machine has, the more complicated the assembly, dismantling and cleaning is likely to be.

Always wash your juicer immediately after use. I use a Breville Juicer and find it extremely easy to rinse. It doesn’t have all sorts of nooks and crannies in the design that complicates the cleaning. A white housing will often become stained by produce such as carrots. Sometimes these stains can be removed by wiping the plastic with a paper towel dampened with a few drops of vegetable oil. There will also be the inevitable build-up of mineral deposits. This brownish discoloration is unsightly, but unfortunately part and parcel of the juicing operation. Don’t worry too much about this. Continuing to juice is much more important than having a spotless juicer!

The components of some juice extractors, such as the Breville Juice Fountain, can be washed on the top rack of your dishwasher. This is of course very convenient.

I often give the juicer’s components a thorough soaking in water in which a gentle clothing detergent has been dissolved. A few hours of this often takes care of any stains. It is usually not advisable to soak the blade for any length of time. Check with the manufacturer if this procedure is safe for your juicer.

A juicer that isn’t cleaned properly can become moldy. A thorough cleaning job to prevent this, is vital. Many manufacturers include a firm scrub brush for cleaning the blade and screen. This is helpful. Use a toothbrush, nail brush or other small brush if this isn’t part of your juicer’s package. Doing this under running water is highly effective.
