Fruits And Vegetables Good For Hair Growth, Plus Juicing Recipe For Healthy Hair

Fruits and vegetables good for hair growth? Oh, yes! Nature gives us an abundance of nutrients that are superb for healthier, fuller, faster growing hair. Although it will take a while, the hair growth vitamins in fruits and vegetables[1] can really make a difference!

Are you perhaps concerned about hair that seems to be thinning? Or are you frustrated with brittle and dull hair, secretly wishing for the soft and glossy tresses you see in hair product advertisements?

Or is it a dry, itchy scalp that is driving you up the wall? Or do you simply want to know how to grow your hair faster?

Read on to find out how juicing the right goodies may help you! And further down, I will also be giving you my Hair-Repair Juice Recipe to enjoy.

Possible causes of hair loss

  • Hormonal problems
  • Certain prescription medications
  • An under active or overactive thyroid
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Rough treatment of your hair
  • Chemical processes hair are subjected to
  • Surgery
  • Severe illness
  • Intense emotional distress
  • Cancer treatments

  • Metabolic changes due to unhealthy dieting

While you can try lotions and potions and all sorts of shampoos, it makes a lot of sense to work on hair loss, a dry scalp or problem hair from the inside out, via what you eat or juice! The bonus is that almost anything that helps to promote healthier hair, will also benefit your skin and nails in the long run.

Be patient, though. These are not quick fixes. Don't expect an overnight improvement. It will take some time to see results.

Foods And Vitamins For Faster Hair Growth And Healthy Hair

1. Fruits and vegetables for biotin

One of the top hair growth vitamins to target is Biotin. This is also known as vitamin H or vitamin B7. Although this is one of the B-vitamins, it is one that is less familiar to most of us.

Biotin plays a role in functions such as the metabolism of fats in your body, energy production and blood sugar control. In addition, it has been recognized as important for healthy hair, healthy skin and stronger, faster-growing nails.

Biotin is necessary to produce keratin. Keratin is one of the proteins found in our hair, nails and skin. Keratin is crucial for hair growth, as well as the texture and manageability of your hair. It also helps to improve elasticity and may reduce brittleness or hair breakage.

You can get Biotin from a variety of dairy products, organ meats such as liver, eggs, avocados and breads. Nuts such as almonds and walnuts will also add to your Biotin intake.

You can eat or juice these fruits and vegetables for their Biotin content:

  • Swiss chard (the top choice!)
  • Spinach
  • Cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Tomatoes
  • Carrots
  • Romaine lettuce
  • Broccoli
  • Raspberries
  • Strawberries
  • Cauliflower
  • Cucumber
  • Cabbage
  • Avocado

2. Protein

A variety of protein sources can contribute to both healthy hair follicles and strong, more luxuriant, faster growing hair. A good tip is to try and include a small portion of healthy fat and healthy protein with your juices, such as a small handful of nuts. If you are having a smoothie, try adding some ground nuts to it.

This will give you that protein boost for your hair, keep you full and satisfied for longer and also help your body with absorption of the fat-soluble nutrients.

3. Walnuts

Nuts such as walnuts are chock-full of omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, selenium and vitamin E. All of these are crucial for healthy hair growth. Selenium is superb for promoting a healthy scalp and may therefore help to reduce or prevent dandruff. Brazil nuts are rich in this nutrient. Zinc has an effect on the hormones that may lead to hair loss.

4. Salmon

Fatty fish such as salmon can help you to increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids may help to prevent further loss of hair (depending on the cause) and also aid hair growth. These fatty acids can also keep your scalp healthy. It can lessen dryness of your scalp, reducing embarrassing flaking.

Other sources of omega-3 fatty acids include mackerel, herring or sardines. Avocado's, freshly ground flax seed and nuts such as walnuts are also rich in fatty acids.

5. Sunflower seeds

This is a good snack to munch on and will give you vitamin E, B-vitamins, as well as selenium. Vitamin E[2] is good for improving blood flow to your skin, nails and scalp. The effect on your hair can be better and faster growth. As this is an antioxidant, it can also offer your hair some protection from the damage free radicals could cause.

Vitamin E also plays a role in the production of keratin (see number 1) and can help with the elasticity of your hair.

Other good sources of vitamin E include avocados, almonds, spinach, tomatoes, hazelnuts, peanuts, kiwi fruit and sunflower oil.

6. Bananas and cucumbers

Bananas and cucumbers are particularly rich in silica. This mineral is absolutely crucial for the formation of collagen, another of the building blocks when it comes to our hair, skin, nails, etc. As you age, you are more likely to become deficient in silica, which is one of the reasons why your hair may become more brittle and your skin will lose some elasticity.

Luckily it is very easy to target silica in juice and smoothie recipes! Simply make sure you add some of these goodies regularly:

  • Bananas
  • Melon
  • Mango
  • Pineapple
  • Green string beans
  • Cucumber
  • Carrots
  • Strawberries
  • Leeks
  • Spinach and other leafy greens
  • Celery

One of the reasons you should try to get organic, unwaxed cucumbers, is because of the silica in the skin of the cucumber. If you need to peel the cucumber, you will lose a substantial percentage of the silica, as it is concentrated in the skin. Your hair definitely isn't too happy if all that goodness is lost. It wants that skin! :-)

You can also include raisins, dates, nuts such as pecans, eggs, wholegrain breads, oats and pumpkin seeds in your diet to increase your silica intake.

7. Vitamin C

Another way to ensure optimal collagen formation, is through fruits and veggies rich in vitamin C. So, add kiwi fruit, berries, guavas, kale, citrus, strawberries, bell peppers, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and other vitamin C sources to your juices and smoothies as often as you can!

8. Other minerals and vitamins for hair growth

  • Beta-carotene (sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe)
  • Selenium (fish, nuts, eggs, sunflower seeds, broccoli, grapefruit, bananas)
  • Vitamin D (sunshine)
  • Zinc (eggs, pecan nuts, pumpkin seed)
  • Lignans (ground flax seed, cruciferous vegetables)

Hair-Repair Juice Recipe

4 Swiss chard leaves (or other leafy green)
1/2 Medium cucumber
1 Cup raspberries or strawberries (or a mix)
1 Kiwi fruit
4 Carrots
2 Pears
2 Tomatoes
1/4 Medium beet
Optional: Some mixed nuts to eat with your juice (alternatively, a slice or two of avocado will also do)

1. Discard the carrot greens, as these are toxic
2. Wash all the ingredients carefully
3. Peel cucumber only if waxed, as the skin is extremely nutrient-rich
4. Remove stray leaves and stems from the berries
5. Peel kiwi fruit if you prefer and halve
6. Trim carrot ends
7. Quarter the pears. Don't peel, but discard seeds
8. Quarter the tomatoes
9. Peel beet thinly
10. Juice all the ingredients, adding the chard with the pears or carrots

2 to 3 Medium
