How to choose a juicer? Where do you start? How do you know what the best juicer is you can buy for your family?
When you go shopping for a juicer, you may find yourself saying 'Huh?' quite often at first! That is, whenever sales people pepper you with terms such as centrifugal, masticating or triturating! What on earth are they talking about? You just want a juicer!
Well, here you will find out what all those strange terms mean. Soon you will be able to walk into any store and ask confidently about juicers from the following categories:
I want to help you to make the best choice for your family.
- Centrifugal Juicers
- Single Gear Masticating Juicers
- Twin Gear Or Triturating Juicer
- Hydraulic Press Juicers
- Wheatgrass Juicers
- Citrus Juicers
- Commercial Juicers
- Sugar Cane Juicers
Remember, the best juicer for you isn't necessarily the most expensive juicer or the juicer with the most additional gadgets! The best juicer for you is the one you will find the easiest to use and clean. The one that will be in use regularly, not the one you will feel like banning to the back of a cupboard, because it is so complicated...
In the first few articles I list here, I will give you a broad overview of the types of juicers on the market. I will also explain why a blender doesn't have the same function as a juicer. Then we will dig deeper into the various types of juicers.
A centrifugal juicer basically has a two-part process. First it cuts up the produce with the help of a flat cutting blade. The next step is to spin the fruits and vegetables at an extremely high speed, in the process separating the juice from the plant fibers. The juice is guided into one container, while the pulp (left-over fiber) is dumped into a separate container.
When you read centrifugal juicer reviews, you will discover that, generally speaking, these machines are the easiest to use, munching through the veggies at a fast clip. Unfortunately, the high speeds at which they spin, create a lot of heat in some of the models. This leads to a process called oxidation, which contributes to nutrient losses.
Thanks to newer technology, though, this is becoming less of an issue. In Breville juicers, for instance, temperatures are raised only minimally in spite of the high speed. The result is juice with excellent nutrient retention and low oxidation levels. I love the ease of use and the quick-rinse cleaning of these juicers.
Where I made a mistake when I was new to juicing many years ago, was in choosing a machine with an inferior motor. The result was a juicer complaining about burn-out after a mere 6 months! How disappointing - not to mention expensive! A bit of extra homework when I was a newby in the juicing world, could have saved me the expense of having to buy a second, more powerful juicer. So, take your time when making your choice.
Now it is time for a general overview of the centrifugal juicers that are available in this competitive market.

Breville has become known as a firm with top-rated juicer technology. Even though Breville juicers spin extremely fast, they have been shown to cause only a minimal raise in temperature. Are you wondering what in the world a single gear masticating juicer is? You are absolutely right if you suspect that it has something to do with chewing!
Let's look at an example: If you chew a raw carrot, you can only get to a tiny fraction of the nutrients that are trapped in the fiber. However, if you feed a carrot into a single gear masticating juicer, the machine will 'chew' that carrot fibers until all the plant cell walls have been ruptured. In the process, a much larger percentage of the vitamins, enzymes and minerals are extracted, giving you a nutrient-laden punch when you drink the resultant juice.
So, these days you don't have to do all the tough chewing yourself! You could decide to leave your willing single gear masticating juicer to get on with it, if you wish!
Single gear masticating juicers can sometimes be more efficient than centrifugal juicers. They will often produce a larger quantity of juice. They can also often take care of juicing wheat grass and other tough leafy greens - check with your supplier.
Masticating juicers don't generate a high level of heat. This means that the delicate nutrients will be protected, leaving them to go straight into your glass of fresh, healthy juice.
Below you will find a list of review articles and general information about single gear masticating juicers.

Twin gear or triturating juicers rank among the more expensive machines on the market. They operate at very low speeds (even lower than single gear juice extractors) and manage to extract a good quantity of juice from fruits and vegetables. They sport 2 interlocking roller gears, often made from stainless steel. Their high-power compression and grinding process is very efficient, particularly when it comes to rupturing cell walls.
The usefulness of these machines has to do with much more than just juicing. You can use them to prepare a variety of other food stuffs, such as healthy nut butters, baby foods and even deserts!

You will have to dig deep into your pocket for one of these, but juicing purists want nothing else in their kitchens! The Norwalk Juicer is one of the hydraulic press juicers.
It was dreamed up by dr. Norman Walker many years ago and is basically a combination juicer. It brings the functionality of a grinding triturating machine and adds to that a hydraulic press, resulting in a very nutrient-rich juice. This juicer takes time to get to know and the cleaning isn't a quick job. You have to be very, very sure that this is right for you, before buying one.

While the juicers we have already covered can handle most produce, wheatgrass needs something special. Wheatgrass juicers are manufactured to deal specifically with juicing wheatgrass and leafy greens. Remember that you won't be able to use one of these for all your juicing. They are mainly for wheatgrass, although they can also handle greens and certain of the softer fruits.
These juicers come in manual or electric models. Many folks found wheatgrass juice to be too potent, so make sure you will be able to tolerate it before you buy one of these machines.
