"I was very pleased with the quick response from Rika and her extensive knowledge about greens and how to make good tasting juices. She was able to tell me what greens are toxic also; I did not know that carrot greens were toxic! This is really important to a newbie such as myself. I look forward to visiting the site in the future as I juice my way to good health." - Gail S.

Welcome to Tip 5 in my series 'How To Lose Weight Without A Diet'.

Are you or your kids in the habit of downing one to two 12 ounce cans of soda pop almost every day? Is soda - and even diet soda - bad for you? Let's see...

If you drink one to two cans of soda pop (roughly 140 calories per 12 ounce can) on a daily basis, that can add between 51,000 and 102,000 calories to your intake over a period of a year! If you lose the soft drinks, you could lose anything from 14 pounds to 29 pounds in a year, without making any other change in your diet!

Why Is Soda Bad For You? Why Is Diet Soda Bad For You?

1. Stacked With Sugar

Did you know that every single 12 ounce can of regular soda comes with a load of around 10 teaspoons of sugar! That is just about your full quota of sugar for the day guzzled down in a few moments! Do you have a 2-can-a-day habit? Just imagine how that adds up in a year! At least 146 cups of sugar mindlessly swallowed! Isn't that sweet thought a bit sickening?

It can be even worse, as what started out as a drink in a small 6 ounce bottle years, was upgraded to a 12 ounce can, and then upped again to a fairly 'regular' 20 ounce can! And these days, ordering a 32 ounce extra large can has often become the norm.

What does all that sugar do?

  • Your blood sugar spikes and then plummets to a really low level, leaving you lethargic and hungry.

  • This causes you look for something to eat and thus creates a truly vicious cycle that leads to even more weight gain.

  • So, it is not just what you are eating that adds to that ugly tummy fat, but what you are drinking as well!

  • And in time, the sugar can contribute to you developing type 2 Diabetes as well as cardio problems.
Is a can of soda pop really worth the risk to your future health and that of your family?

2. Eroding Teeth Enamel

Your dentist bill may very well be shrinking with you, if you replace the soda habit with something more healthy. Soda pop is really bad for the dental health of your family. Soda pop drinks are highly acidic - more or less the same level as vinegar. What happens if you leave vinegar on metal? It rusts. You will see a similar reaction with soda. Add the high sugar content to the mix and you have a recipe for a dental disaster. So, do you still think it is okay for you or your kids to expose your beautiful, strong, white teeth to the risk of enamel erosion on a daily basis? Get the picture?

3. Immune System Issues

Did you know that soda create a more acidic state in your whole body, in addition to contributing to weight gain? That means that you are creating the perfect environment for all sorts of nasties to flourish. The whole picture is one of creating a compromized immune system.

4. Bone Loss Bummer

Are you aware that soda pop can contribute to the development of osteoporosis or bone loss in your body? The ingredients may cause you to lose calcium from your bones! You can even lose teeth in the process. Scary thought? Studies have also shown that kids who fill themselves up with sodas, often don't eat balanced meals. This further increases the likelihood of deficiencies in terms of calcium and other nutrients.

5. Artificial Sweetener Risks

Why is diet soda bad for you? It doesn't come with such a sugar punch, but the sweeteners in diet sodas can be even worse for you. Some sweeteners have been linked to possible carcinogenic effects in the body, while others may produce nasties such as methanol. Not quite my idea of being good to my body!

Some studies also show that even the artificially sweet taste may be enough to get your body to release insulin - so you may get that whole reaction even though you are not taking in sugar. You may also 'think' that while you are drinking diet soda, you to eat more snacks, etc.

Add to the above mix the caffeine and preservatives in the soft drink and that is enough to make me pass on soda pop for life! We simply refuse to have it in our home.

What are better choices than soda pop?

  1. Pure water.

  2. Freshly made vegetable juice, of course!

  3. Skim milk.

  4. Sparkling water with some lemon or cranberry.

  5. Seltzer with some fruit juice to taste (about two thirds seltzer and one third fruit juice).

  6. Caffeine-free herbal tea, such as green tea. Comes with many health benefits to boot!

  7. Liven up your water by popping fruit slices into an ice cube tray. Fill up with water and you have colorful cubes to add to your water.

  8. Even coffee (in moderation of course and without cream!) can be better for you than soda pop.
Is soda pop bad for your health? Is diet soda bad for you? You bet!

In the long run it will be a health gift to your family if you replace soft drinks with a healthier alternative.

I don't miss soda pop. I don't even think about it. I have become so used to opting for the other items on the list above. You can too and in the process you will discover how to lose weight without a diet!
