She was able to tell me what greens are toxic also; I did not know that carrot greens were toxic! This is really important to a newbie such as myself. I look forward to visiting the site in the future as I juice my way to good health." - Gail S.

Best Liver Support Foods, Plus Digestive Detox Juice Recipe

liver support after overindulging

We are all exposed to a variety of toxins in our daily living. These can come from many different sources, such as the environment or the types of foods we eat. Sometimes we also overindulge, especially on festive days or during the holiday season. This is when I get lots of questions such as...

  • Are there specific liver support foods I can concentrate on when juicing?
  • Is it necessary for a juice detox as such?
  • Why is it important to keep the normal detoxification process in my body functioning at an optimal level?
  • What are the best fruits and veggies to juice after overindulging?
  • Can vegetable juice help with liver detoxification?

You see, when your body's natural detox system is sluggish or not functioning optimally, it can lead to chronic inflammation. This creates all sorts of havoc in your body. Many common illnesses and age-related health issues start with chronic inflammation. So, it is crucial to take good care of yourself to avoid this state.

I thought it might be helpful to give you a few quick tips covering the most important liver support foods, as well as my Digestive Detox juice recipe.

Now, I don't recommend liver 'cleanses' or a juice detox as such, unless recommended by a medical practitioner and done under medical supervision. Your body actually is wonderfully equipped to take care of a natural liver detox all on its own. In fact, this happens all the time in your body!

What you can do though, is to make sure that your body gets the right nutrients to support this process and to keep it functioning optimally. As your liver is where much of the natural detoxing takes place, certain liver support foods can be of great help. Many fruits and vegetables are loaded with substances that are made to promote liver health.

Liver Support Foods

Let's run through some of the most important fruits and veggies you can use in your juices to support your liver, especially after overindulging.

1. Cruciferous Vegetables

Cruciferous veggies in juiced form are known to be soothing for the whole digestive tract. In addition, they are uniquely packed with fat-burning properties and the substances your body needs for optimal detoxification.

According to The World's Healthiest Foods[1], broccoli is one prime example. Broccoli has 3 specific glucosinolates that play a crucial role in the whole detoxification process in your body. These phytonutrients help to get the detox process started, work to neutralize toxins and also enable your body to get rid of the 'bad guys'.

Broccoli has the highest concentration of these particular glucosinolates, but cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, kale, etc. will also be helpful.

2. Sulfur-Containing Vegetables

If you have any ailment, particularly kidney or gallstones, please speak to your doctor before using these fruits and vegetables. Some of them are fairly high in oxalates. This may be something you need to avoid or limit in your diet. Also remember not to take your medication with juices, as they could affect the absorption

The cruciferous group above consists of sulfur-containing veggies. Apart from them, two of the two main sulfur-containing vegetables are garlic and onions. For obvious reasons these two are not so popular in juice recipes! However, be sure to use them in your cooking as often as you can.

3. Leafy Greens

All your leafy greens are liver support foods. The more bitter they taste, the better. Rocket and dandelion are popular choices, but can be quite potent. Take it slow if you are not used to these.

  3. Quarter pears and apple. Don't peel, but discard seeds
  4. Trim carrot ends
